In 1825, mind Ludwig van Beethoven, here recovering from severe illness, writes a groundbreaking string quartet. In 1972, an Objectivist drag queen finally gets her fifteen minutes of fame in Peoria, Illinois. In 1982, Ayn Rand wakes up in the afterlife, but still can’t shake her clingy lover, Alan Greenspan. In 2009, a young writer suffering from debilitating migraines hears the Beethoven string quartet for the first time. In 2012, Michael Yates Crowley and Michael Rau tunnel through time and space to bring all these people (and more) together in a experimental academic lecture with digressions into song and dance. SONG OF A CONVALESCENT AYN RAND GIVING THANK TO THE GODHEAD, named after a Beethoven string quartet, is an exploration of what it means to be an artist in America.

MICHAEL YATES CROWLEY is a New York City-based playwright and performer. His plays have been produced in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Berlin, and Edinburgh, among other cities. In New York, his work has been seen at 59E59 Theaters, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, PS 122, HERE Arts Center, 3LD, Dixon Place, and Ars Nova. He is a graduate of the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab and former Artist-in-Residence at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center with Michael Rau and their theater company, Wolf 359. Crowley was a 2008-2009 Fellow in Playwriting from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Since 2005 he has curated Hearth Gods, a reading series in the East Village.

MICHAEL RAU is a theater director specializing in new plays, re-imagined classics, and opera. Since 2008 he has been working internationally in Germany, the UK, Ireland, Canada, and Greece. In New York, he has created work at PS 122, HERE Arts Center, Ars Nova, The Bushwick Starr, The Brick, 59E59 and Dixon Place. Michael Rau is a recipient of a 2006 Kennedy Center Directing Fellowship, a 2007 New Play Network Directing Fellowship and a 2008 TCG National Conference Grant. His production of The Great God Brown was exhibited as part of the 2011 Prague Quadrennial. He has served as an assistant for John Turturro at Classic Stage Company, Anne Bogart at the Glimmerglass Opera, Robert Woodruff at San Francisco Opera, and Francesca Zambello at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He was a 2011 Young Artist at The Glimmerglass Festival, an Artist-in-Residence at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, and is a member of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab. He is currently on the faculty of the Steinhardt School of Music at NYU. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received his MFA in Theater Directing from Columbia University.
