IN RESIDENCE: June 11-July 1, here 2013

We at Improbable Stage are thrilled to be back at IRT Theater to develop our new theatre piece, mind LAND, order inspired by the current “back to the land” movement.  We have been busy interviewing farmers, beekeepers, farm to table chefs, sustainable vintners and doing research on all of the socio-political elements of this modern movement.  We are now ready to create a theatrical expression of our findings.

“Whether we and our politicians know it or not, Nature is party to all our deals and decisions, and she has more votes, a longer memory, and a sterner sense of justice than we do.”
~ Wendell Berry

LAND
There have been “back to the land” movements throughout the history of the United States.  During the Great Depression, many out of work Americans tried a sort of modern homesteading; they went back to the farming lifestyle that, at the time, was not so distant as it is to us today.  After WWII, many returning veterans went back to the land to find a more meaningful life than the ignobility of war and the destruction in which they had participated.  By the late 1960s, the anti-establishment movement was in full force; rampant consumerism, the Vietnam War, general distrust of the government, and disgust with urban deterioration inspired many people to recognize what their city or suburban lives had taken from them.  They no longer had any connection with nature and the basics of life.  At present there is, once again, a distinct “back to the land” faction in our country.  The current movement is tag phrased, “off grid” and it is alive and well in the 21st Century.

Pin pointing the cultural and political rationales for these movements is easy.  What we are interested in is the emotional, human rationales, the mystery of our bond with the earth.  Do human beings have an innate connection to the earth, its cycles and rhythms?  And if so, what happens to us when we get more and more distant from this natural connection?  What are we missing when we are no longer responsible for and have no knowledge of living a self-sufficient life?  What drives human beings to return to the LAND?

Improbable Stage Company’s 5th Anniversary Benefit Performance of BOX
Every BOX has six sides, twelve edges, and eight corners.  It is consistent.  It is what’s expected.  It does not change.  So often we make ourselves slaves to the finite expectations of our families, our bosses, our society, ourselves . . . so, when does our BOX become a prison?

Performances:
Monday, June 24 at 7pm
Tuesday, June 25 at 7pm
Wednesday, June 26 at 7pm

Ticket Price: $25
Improbable Student Price: $18
Reception following each performance

Told predominantly through movement, this theatre piece contemplates the safety, the comfort, and the joy of the BOX we know, all the while asking us to consider the possibilities that can arise when one is willing to step outside of that with which we are familiar, and perhaps love more than anything else, in order to experience or perhaps even to create something new.

Are you intrepid, or are you content with the finite definition of happiness and success that our social order dictates?  Find out as you take this theatrical journey exploring a life lived inside and outside the BOX.
